After a student turns 18 years of age they can apply for SSI (Supplemental Security Income). Prior to age 18, the student is still considered as a “dependent” of his/her parent(s) but one month after they turn 18, they are considered to be a “family of one” and the parents’ income will not be considered when determining the client’s eligibility for SSI.
